Meet the Childers
A Lifetime of Service
The Ben and Anne Childers Family YMCA
Ben Childers was originally hire as Waycross YMCA’s Executive Director in 1961 and through much of his tenure his wife Anne served as the Business Manager. Together they built a YMCA dynasty that touched the hearts of many children and families.
In the Childers’ tenure with the Waycross YMCA, they often operated two YMCA facilities. They even had a YMCA touring buss service. The bus greatly expanded the YMCA’s services to include educational and recreational tours. The Childers led many tours across the nation.
The vision for improving access to higher education through the YMCA started with Ben and Anne Childers. A Waycross College scholarship was funded by Mr. A.V. Kennedy in 1987 in the name of Ben and Anne Childers. This fund became the catalyst for the Waycross College YMCA Community Education Center that has recently opened.
Ben and Anne retired in 1992. Together they had 70-years of service to the YMCA. Ben Childers serves as a distinguished member of the Waycross YMCA Life Board.
